Reliable MQL Performance for Metal-Cutting

The Unist Uni-Max ST minimum quantity lubrication system provides repeatable, accurate lubrication for straightforward metal-cutting applications. The system delivers continuous or shot spray lubrication through one or two nozzle outputs, making it a practical choice when dependable spray performance and minimal configuration are the primary requirements.

Instead of flooding the work area with coolant, Minimum Quantity Lubrication, or MQL, applies a controlled amount of high-quality lubricant directly to the cutting tool and workpiece interface. This helps reduce friction and heat generation at the point of contact while keeping the machine and surrounding work area cleaner.

The Uni-Max ST can be configured for drilling, milling, tapping, broaching, turning, routing, circular sawing, band sawing, and other metal-cutting operations. Its modular design allows the lubrication system to be matched to the machine, process, nozzle arrangement, and preferred method of actuation.

Key Benefits of the Unist Uni-Max ST

  • Reduce lubricant consumption: An MQL application may use as little as 2–4 ounces of lubricant per shift.
  • Eliminate manual lubrication: Apply lubricant automatically and consistently instead of relying on an operator to lubricate the tool by hand.
  • Improve tool life: Properly applied MQL can improve tool life by reducing friction and maintaining a more stable cutting temperature.
  • Maintain a cleaner work area: Controlled lubricant application reduces the fluid mess associated with conventional flood coolant systems.
  • Simplify maintenance: Self-priming pumps and quick-connect tubing make the system easier to start, configure, and maintain.
  • Support operator-friendly lubrication: The system is designed for use with Unist Coolube lubricant, which is formulated specifically for MQL applications.

Reliable Positive-Displacement Pump Performance

The Uni-Max ST uses 40 µL positive-displacement pumps to provide consistent fluid output. Pump stroke and atomizing air can be adjusted so the lubrication output can be matched to the requirements of the cutting operation.

The pump design provides repeatable output regardless of normal changes in fluid temperature or viscosity. The pumps are also self-priming, allowing them to draw fluid even when air is present in the fluid line. This helps simplify initial startup and ongoing operation.

Unist reports that its pumps are tested to 12 million cycles. Uni-Max ST systems include a one-year product warranty, and pumps may qualify for Unist’s Lifetime Pump Warranty when Unist lubricants are used exclusively. Warranty eligibility and current terms should be verified with Unist before purchase.

Continuous or Shot Spray Operation

The Uni-Max ST can be configured for either continuous spray or shot spray operation.

Continuous Spray

Continuous spray is intended for operations that require a steady supply of lubricant. Pump frequency can be controlled with a pneumatic pulse generator or an electronic pump timer. Fluid output is adjusted through the pump stroke and cycling frequency.

This configuration is well suited to continuous operations such as sawing, routing, and milling.

Shot Spray

Shot spray delivers a controlled amount of lubricant in response to an actuation signal. The system can be configured to deliver one or more precise shots during each machine cycle.

This configuration is well suited to intermittent operations such as drilling and tapping, where lubrication is only required at specific points in the cycle.

One or Two Configurable Nozzle Outputs

The Uni-Max ST supports one or two nozzle outputs. A single-output system can lubricate one cutting location, while a two-output system can apply lubricant at two locations or approach the tool from two directions.

Unist offers several MQL nozzle designs, spray patterns, lengths, and mounting configurations. Available designs include flexible plastic, semi-rigid copper, stainless steel, fan spray, radial spray, band-saw blade, band-saw guide, and other application-specific nozzles.

Quick-connect tubing makes it easier to attach, remove, or change compatible nozzles when the machine setup or application changes.

Available Uni-Max ST Options

The Uni-Max ST can be configured with several options to match the intended machine and application:

  • Spray mode: Continuous spray or individual shot spray
  • Outputs: One or two nozzle outputs
  • Reservoirs: 16 oz or 64 oz reservoir
  • Low-level monitoring: Optional low-level sensor with the 64 oz reservoir
  • Protection: Full enclosure or chip guard
  • Pump control: Pneumatic pulse generator or electronic pump timer
  • Actuation: Air pilot, solenoid valve, or manual valve
  • Security: Optional tamper-resistant keyed enclosure lock
  • Mounting: Magnetic mounting for compatible machine surfaces
  • Nozzles: Multiple nozzle types, spray patterns, lengths, and mounting arrangements

Typical Applications

The Unist Uni-Max ST may be configured for the following applications:

  • Band sawing
  • Circular sawing
  • CNC routing
  • CNC milling
  • CNC turning
  • Drilling and reaming
  • Tapping
  • Broaching
  • General milling
  • Friction drilling

Because every machining operation has different tooling, materials, cycle timing, and lubrication requirements, the system should be configured for the specific application rather than selected solely by the number of outputs.

Actual specifications depend on the selected reservoir, pump-control method, actuation components, nozzles, and other options. Contact Crane Production Systems for assistance selecting the correct configuration.

Coolube MQL Lubricant

The Uni-Max ST is designed to deliver small, controlled quantities of lubricant, so lubricant selection is an important part of the application. Unist Coolube lubricants are specifically formulated for Minimum Quantity Lubrication and are available for ferrous metals, nonferrous metals, aluminum, stainless steel, and other materials.

Using Unist lubricant exclusively may qualify the pumps for Unist’s Lifetime Pump Warranty. Review the current warranty requirements before selecting a lubricant or operating fluid.
